How to Sell Your Yacht in Thailand

-

Selling a yacht well takes the same care as buying one. The yachts that sell smoothly in Thailand are priced realistically, presented well, supported by clear paperwork and marketed to the right buyers. This guide covers each of those.

Set the right price

Price is the single biggest factor in how quickly a yacht sells. A good broker will prepare a valuation based on recent sales of comparable yachts, the current market in Asia and the condition and equipment of your boat. A yacht priced in line with the market attracts serious buyers early, when interest is at its highest.

Choose a broker

A listing agreement with a reputable broker gives your yacht exposure to buyers in Thailand and across the region. Look for a broker with a strong record of sales in Phuket, good international reach and a clear marketing plan. Ask how they will present the yacht, where it will be advertised and how they qualify buyers before viewings.

Central listings, where one broker manages the sale and shares it with others in the industry, usually reach the widest pool of buyers.

Prepare the yacht

First impressions count. A yacht that is clean, well maintained and free of clutter shows its space and its care. Useful steps before listing include:

A thorough clean inside and out, including the engine room and bilges.

Servicing the engines and generators, and fixing small faults that a buyer would notice.

Removing personal items so buyers can imagine the yacht as their own.

Fresh antifouling if it is due, since a survey will include a haul out.

Present it well

Professional photography and video are essential. Aerial footage of the yacht at anchor in Phang Nga Bay tells a buyer more than any description. A detailed specification and a full inventory help serious buyers shortlist your yacht with confidence.

Get the paperwork ready

Gather the registration documents, proof of ownership, the builder’s certificate, maintenance and service records, previous survey reports and any equipment warranties. For a foreign flagged yacht, confirm its current temporary import status in Thailand. Clear paperwork shortens the sale and reassures buyers. The sale process

When a buyer makes an offer, your broker negotiates on your behalf. Once terms are agreed, both sides sign a sale agreement and the buyer pays a deposit. The buyer then carries out a survey and sea trial. After acceptance, the sale closes, the balance is paid and ownership passes. Our guide to buying a yacht in Thailand shows the process from the buyer’s side.

Timing

In Phuket, buyer activity is highest in the high season from November to April, when visitors are on the island and the yacht can be shown in good conditions. Listing a yacht a month or two before the season gives it time to be photographed and marketed.
